Lingüista y reformador educacional alemán. Hermano mayor de
Alexander von Humboldt, ocupó varios cargos gubernamentales. Como ministro de educación (1809), elevó el nivel de la educación básica y contribuyó de manera importante a la fundación de la Universidad Friedrich Wilhelm en Berlín (actualmente Universidad de Humboldt o Universidad de
Berlín). Hizo también importantes aportes a la filosofía del lenguaje, al sostener que su carácter y estructura expresan la cultura e individualidad del hablante y que los seres humanos perciben el mundo a través del lenguaje. Por otra parte, realizó investigaciones sobre el
vasco y el kawi (javanés antiguo).
